Anna's Hummingbird (female),
Calypte anna
This high-speed flash photograph shot at a distance of
1 foot is fast enough to stop the hummingbird's wings, which beat about 80 times
per second. The beak is parted, revealing the slender tongue drinking from the
feeder. The iridescent green sheen of the bird's feathers are also revealed by
the flash. With the flash illuminating the bird only, the background receives no
light, and is completely black. Kodachrome Professional, 105mm macro lens, flash
exposure.
